Renowned Pan-African scholar Prof. PLO Lumumba has weighed in on Tanzania’s political debate, defending President Samia Suluhu Hassan amid criticism over alleged suppression of opposition figures. Lumumba argued that even if all opposition leaders had been allowed to contest, Suluhu would still have emerged victorious due to her growing popularity and leadership style.

In a statement shared on Facebook, Lumumba maintained that Suluhu’s leadership has resonated strongly with ordinary Tanzanians, particularly for her calm approach to governance, focus on reconciliation, and efforts to open Tanzania to international engagement.

His remarks come just days after Kenyan lawyer Miguna Miguna accused Suluhu of hypocrisy for allegedly detaining Tundu Lissu and restricting opposition participation.

The former anti-corruption boss said that while democracy demands fairness and inclusion, Tanzania’s political reality shows Suluhu commands a broad base of support that cuts across tribal and regional lines. He noted that her administration’s focus on economic recovery, infrastructure, and women’s empowerment has strengthened her image as a unifying national leader.

However, Lumumba’s comments have divided opinion online. Some Tanzanians welcomed his analysis, saying it reflects the true mood on the ground, while others accused him of overlooking the struggles faced by opposition voices under Suluhu’s rule. Critics insist that genuine democracy cannot thrive under restrictions, regardless of a leader’s popularity.

Observers believe Lumumba’s remarks could help shift regional narratives about Suluhu’s legitimacy, especially after weeks of heated debate triggered by Miguna’s criticism. Analysts also point out that Lumumba’s words carry weight across Africa, where he is seen as a respected defender of constitutionalism and justice.

As Tanzania prepares for future elections, the spotlight now remains on whether President Suluhu will maintain her reconciliatory tone or tighten political space in the face of growing opposition pressure.
