Ugandan music star Jose Chameleone has sparked mixed reactions after openly supporting President Yoweri Museveni, who has been in power since 1986 and is now seeking another term in office.
Chameleone, known for his close friendship with opposition leader and fellow musician Bobi Wine, said his decision to back Museveni was based on personal reasons and respect for the President’s leadership. He stated that his choice was not about betrayal or politics but about his belief in stability and progress for Uganda.
Speaking during a recent campaign event, Chameleone said, “President Museveni has done a lot for our country. I believe in peace and continuity. My support is about development, not division.” His words, however, have divided fans across social media, with some praising him for expressing his opinion freely and others accusing him of turning against his longtime friend Bobi Wine.
Bobi Wine, whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, has been Museveni’s main challenger in previous elections. The two musicians once shared stages and messages calling for change and better leadership in Uganda. Their different political paths have, however, made their relationship more complicated in recent years.
Chameleone added that he still respects Bobi Wine as a person and artist, saying, “I have no problem with Bobi. We may not agree politically, but I will always respect him as a brother.”
Museveni’s decision to seek another term has already drawn attention across Uganda and beyond, as he remains one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders. Many are now watching how the entertainment industry will influence political campaigns, given the popularity of musicians like Bobi Wine and Chameleone among the youth.
As the election season approaches, Uganda is once again witnessing strong debates about leadership, loyalty, and change — with musicians playing a major role in shaping public opinion.
