First Lady Rachel Ruto on Wednesday arrived in Nakuru County to preside over the 2025 edition of the First Lady’s Mazingira Awards, a ceremony that celebrates individuals and organizations championing environmental conservation across Kenya.
The colorful event, held at the Nakuru Athletics Club, brought together government officials, environmental activists, students, and community leaders from all 47 counties. The annual awards recognize efforts in tree planting, waste management, clean energy innovation, and climate change advocacy.
Speaking during her arrival, Mrs. Ruto emphasized the importance of collective responsibility in protecting the environment, noting that sustainable development can only be achieved through active community participation. “The future of our planet depends on the choices we make today. Every Kenyan must take part in restoring and preserving our environment,” she said.
She commended this year’s award nominees for their outstanding contribution to Kenya’s environmental goals, especially those supporting the government’s target of planting 15 billion trees by 2032.
Nakuru Governor Susan Kihika welcomed the First Lady and applauded her leadership in promoting climate action through initiatives such as the Mama Doing Good and Green Promise programs.
Several schools, youth groups, and women-led organizations were honored for their innovations in renewable energy and eco-friendly farming.
The First Lady concluded her speech by urging county governments and private institutions to collaborate more closely in implementing green projects that safeguard Kenya’s natural heritage for future generations.
