Political debate within Kenya’s opposition has intensified after MP Caleb Amisi commented on former Siaya Governor James Orengo’s political future.
Amisi said Orengo should be free to pursue his political ambitions under Linda Mwananchi or any other political formation he chooses.
The remarks appear to signal growing differences within opposition ranks as political leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
Amisi acknowledged Orengo’s long history in Kenyan politics and said the veteran politician deserves recognition for the struggles he has gone through over the years.
However, he made it clear that political differences should not prevent individual leaders from choosing the political vehicle they believe can best serve their interests and supporters.
“We give Orengo his flowers for his past struggles. He can go ahead and vie under Linda Mwananchi or whichever formation he wishes,” Amisi said.
The statement comes at a time when opposition parties and leaders are engaged in discussions over possible alliances and the best strategy to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 elections.
Orengo has remained an influential figure in opposition politics for decades, having played a major role in Kenya’s reform movement and served in senior government and political positions.
Amisi’s comments could further fuel discussions about the future of the opposition, particularly as different leaders push for stronger structures and clearer leadership ahead of the next election.
The question of who will lead the opposition into the 2027 presidential contest remains one of the biggest political issues in the country.
With political alliances continuing to shift, leaders are expected to make strategic decisions on the parties and coalitions they will use to seek elective positions.
For now, Amisi’s message is that Orengo should be allowed to choose his preferred political path, even if that means pursuing his ambitions outside the current opposition arrangement.
