Jackson Kimeu Mulinge, born in 1924 in Kathiani, Machakos County, was a pioneering figure in Kenya’s military history and the first Kenyan to attain the prestigious rank of four-star General.
His rise from humble beginnings to the highest military office remains one of the most inspiring stories in Kenya’s defence history. Mulinge’s journey began when he was recruited into the King’s African Rifles in 1942, after being spotted by colonial officers impressed by his physique.
He went on to serve with distinction during World War II in Ethiopia and later in the Malayan Emergency, where he proved himself as a disciplined and courageous soldier.
After Kenya’s independence, Mulinge continued his military service with dedication. In 1961, he became the first African officer in Kenya to receive the Queen’s Commission as a Second Lieutenant.
His career advanced rapidly through the ranks, and he went on to command the Kenya Army before being appointed Chief of General Staff in 1978 under President Daniel arap Moi.
It was during this time that he achieved the four-star General rank, marking him as Kenya’s highest-ranking military officer.
His leadership was crucial during times of political instability, particularly during the failed coup attempts of 1971 and 1982, when his loyalty to the government helped safeguard Kenya’s democracy.
General Mulinge retired in 1986 after more than four decades of exemplary service.
Upon leaving the military, he joined politics and was elected as the Member of Parliament for Kathiani Constituency under the KANU party.
He later served in the Cabinet as Minister for Lands and Urban Development, and later as Minister for Health.
Known for his humility and love for community development, Mulinge championed projects that improved infrastructure, education, and healthcare in his home region.
He passed away on 16 July 2014 in Nairobi at the age of 90, after battling illness for several years.
His funeral was marked by full military honours and a 21-gun salute, a fitting farewell to a man who devoted his life to national service.
