President William Ruto has appointed four people to key constitutional commissions and an oversight body, filling vacant positions at the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), Teachers Service Commission (TSC) and Public Service Commission (PSC).
The appointments were contained in a Kenya Gazette notice dated Monday, August 31, 2026. All four appointees will serve six-year terms.
Dr Duncan Oburu Ojwang has been appointed chairperson of IPOA, the authority responsible for civilian oversight of policing in Kenya. His appointment follows approval by the National Assembly on August 19 after he was vetted by the Departmental Committee on Administration and Internal Security.
Ojwang takes over from Justice Ahmed Issack Hassan, who left the IPOA chairmanship after his appointment to the Court of Appeal.
At the TSC, former Kenya National Union of Teachers Secretary-General Wilson Sossion and Antonina Lentoijoni have been formally appointed as commissioners officially. Their appointments were approved by the National Assembly on August 25.
Sossion was nominated in July and later appeared before Parliament for vetting. During the process, he said his experience representing teachers would help him contribute to teacher welfare and policy matters at the commission.
Lentoijoni also brings experience from the education sector. Before her appointment, she served as TSC director of staffing.
Ruto also appointed Flora Nduku Mutua as a member of the Public Service Commission for six years. The PSC oversees important areas of Kenya’s public service, including appointments, promotions, discipline and the organisation of public offices.
The latest appointments follow earlier nominations made in July to fill vacancies in the three institutions. The formal gazette notice completes the appointment process after parliamentary consideration and approval.
The new officials are now expected to begin their respective roles as the commissions continue carrying out their legal duties.
