Professor Makau Mutua, a senior adviser on Constitutional Affairs to President William Ruto, has once again criticized informal transport in Nairobi, focusing this time on tuk tuks.
In a recent statement posted online, he questioned the presence of the three wheeled vehicles in the city, arguing they are not roadworthy and contribute to congestion and disorder.
Mutua labeled them as degrading to the urban environment and insisted they should be removed to protect Nairobi’s infrastructure and sanity.
This development follows prior calls from Mutua to ban boda bodas, motorbike taxis in major cities.
His push came after a deadly crash in Donholm involving a boda boda, which sparked violent responses including the burning of a bus by angered riders.
Mutua argued that the boda boda sector has become a serious safety risk and lacks discipline.
He urged for an immediate ban, stating that a modern city cannot tolerate the chaos and lawlessness associated with these forms of informal transport.
In response, the Boda Boda Association of Kenya (BAK) pushed back.
They emphasized that the sector supports over two million families and plays a central role in government’s economic agenda, highlighting that it contributes significantly under the Bottom Up Economic Transformation Agenda.
They described Mutua’s remarks as unfair and irresponsible, arguing that informal transportation is critical to many livelihoods in Kenya.
