A fuel attendant in Karai, Naivasha, has shared a haunting account of the early morning events that preceded the tragic death of veteran politician and businessman Cyrus Jirongo. The incident occurred in the early hours of Saturday, December 13, along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway, a stretch known for heavy night traffic.
According to the attendant, Jirongo arrived alone at the Eagle petrol station at around 2:15 a.m. driving a white Mercedes-Benz. What immediately stood out was the direction from which he entered the station. He reportedly came from the Nakuru side but accessed the petrol station through an incorrect entry point. Despite this, Jirongo appeared calm and unhurried as he slowly approached the fuel pumps.
The situation took an unexpected turn when Jirongo did not stop to refuel. Instead, he made a turn and rejoined the highway almost immediately. The attendant noticed something was wrong when the vehicle entered the wrong lane, heading toward Nakuru using lanes meant for traffic going to Nairobi.
Moments later, the quiet of the night was shattered by a loud crash. Realizing that an accident had likely occurred, the attendant rushed to the highway. He found the Mercedes badly damaged following a head-on collision. Attempts to open the vehicle were unsuccessful as the doors were locked.
Peering through the window, he saw a man slumped over the steering wheel with visible head injuries and blood. Alarmed by the severity of the situation, the attendant contacted police at around 2:37 a.m. Several vehicles passed without stopping, though one motorist eventually pulled over to assist. By then, it was evident that the driver had died.
Police later confirmed the victim as Cyrus Jirongo. The attendant says the images from that night remain vivid, describing the experience as deeply traumatic and a reminder of how quickly life can change.
