In the Mt. Kenya region, Geoffrey Ruku, the Member of Parliament for Mbeere North, has pushed for political coalitions, with the east backing Kithure Kindiki and Justin Muturi and the west backing Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
In Mung’au, Embu County, Ruku declared at a church service that the moment has come for the area’s political loyalty to break away from the greater Mt Kenya region, which enjoys equal representation and powerful leaders in the government.
I believe it is past time to split the mountain into Mount Kenya East and West. We’re sick of the daily politics of winning that Mt Kenya is this and that, he said to the assembly.
Under the direction of their Cabinet Secretaries, Ruku asked civic leaders and residents to band together and take autonomous action on development issues.
Ruku stated that this strategy would strengthen Mt. Kenya East leaders who are dedicated to serving the people, seemingly in a subdued jab at Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and Laikipia East MP Mwangi Kiunjiri, who have been vying for influence in the area.
He clarified that the continuous political disputes from the western side of the mountain, where politicians regularly spar over who should be in charge of Mount Kenya, served as the driving force for this decision.
“Our leaders are here on Mount Kenya East, where I am at the moment. Our leaders are Professor Kithure Kindiki and Justin Bedan Njoka Muturi,” Ruku continued.
As the nation gets ready for the 2027 elections, there are growing political tensions in the region regarding who the kingpin is. This is when he made these remarks.
