A Ugandan comedian has returned home from the United States with a sobering account of life abroad, challenging the widely held belief that relocating overseas guarantees instant success.
Simon Bashir Kawuki, popularly known as MC Kapale, travelled to the US with hopes of building a better future.
Like many others chasing the American dream, he expected improved opportunities and financial stability.
However, his experience turned out very different from what he had imagined.
Shortly after arriving, Kapale began facing unexpected challenges. Despite speaking English, he struggled to adapt to the accent and communication style, which left him feeling isolated. Simple interactions became difficult, making it hard for him to settle into his new environment.
His situation worsened when he failed to secure stable employment. A lack of proper documentation limited his options, leaving him unable to find consistent work.
Without income, accessing basic needs such as housing became a daily struggle.
In a bid to survive, Kapale entered into a marriage with an older white woman. He hoped the union would provide stability, including accommodation and a pathway to legal status. However, he later described the relationship as distressing and far from what he expected.
Instead of support, he found himself in a difficult domestic arrangement. He said he was required to perform various duties and felt pressured within the relationship. What he thought would be a solution became a source of emotional strain.
Kapale revealed that the experience significantly affected his mental health. He noted that many Africans living abroad silently endure similar hardships due to stigma and fear of judgment.
He also regretted selling property back home to fund his relocation, calling it a costly mistake. Now back in Uganda, he says he has no intention of returning to the US and is focused on rebuilding his life.
Reflecting on his journey, Kapale emphasized the importance of preparation before moving abroad, urging others to carefully consider the realities behind the dream.
