Kenyans on social media have reacted strongly after Senator Samson Cherargei made remarks in the Senate about activists who recently travelled to Tanzania.
During a session in Parliament, the senator praised Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu for calling out the group.
A video clip of the speech has been widely shared online. In the clip, Senator Cherargei said he supports President Suluhu’s stand against the activists. He said that instead of just calling them out, the Tanzanian leader should have detained them.
He believes the activists went to Tanzania to disrupt peace and that their behavior reflects poorly on Kenya.
The senator said such activists have created a culture of disrespect and bad manners in Kenya. According to him, these individuals are now trying to spread that behavior across East Africa.
He warned that activists are often funded by foreign donors to cause instability in peaceful nations.
He praised Tanzania as a peaceful country and said it should be protected from outside influence. He also said there is mutual respect in Tanzania and that other countries in the region should learn from that example.
Cherargei urged President Suluhu to help in disciplining what he described as ill-behaved activists, in the spirit of East African unity.
He questioned why these activists are involving themselves in the internal matters of other countries and said their actions should not be allowed to continue.
