Drama unfolded in Nyeri County after a local teacher allegedly fainted upon discovering a large stash of old Kenyan currency notes hidden in his late father’s document chest.
The teacher, who was reportedly organizing paperwork left behind by his deceased father, stumbled upon a sealed envelope stuffed with bundles of KSh 1,000 notes — all in the old series withdrawn by the Central Bank of Kenya.
The old currency, rendered obsolete shortly after President William Ruto assumed office, is no longer recognized as legal tender following the countrywide demonetization exercise initiated to combat illicit financial flows and corruption.
According to sources at the scene, the visibly shocked teacher collapsed after realizing the cash was now worthless.
Family members rushed to assist him and later confirmed that the money appeared untouched for years, possibly saved in secrecy by the late patriarch.
Authorities and financial experts have since reminded Kenyans to ensure all old notes were exchanged within the official deadlines announced by the Central Bank during the currency transition.
