A woman from Nairobi’s Kasarani area is seeking assistance after her marriage reportedly collapsed over political differences linked to her support for President William Samoei Ruto.
Rachel Muthoni, a mother of two from Mwiki, claims she was forced out of her matrimonial home after getting a tattoo of the president’s face alongside the “tutam” slogan.
According to her, the decision to permanently ink her political allegiance marked the peak of longstanding disagreements with her husband.
Speaking in an interview, Muthoni said tensions began when she openly declared her support for Ruto, while her husband aligned himself with the opposing “wantam” political faction. The differences, she said, gradually strained their relationship.
“I got the tattoo because I strongly believe in the president and his leadership. I didn’t think it would cost me my marriage,” she said.
Muthoni recounted that her husband discovered the tattoo as she prepared to take a shower, an encounter that quickly escalated into a confrontation.
She alleges that he became angered and ordered her to leave their home, questioning why she would tattoo another man’s face on her body.
Now without a place to stay, the woman says she is appealing for help, adding that the separation has taken an emotional toll on her and her children.
She also expressed hope of one day meeting the president, noting that she had even planned to release a song in his honour before the fallout.
“I don’t think having a political stand is wrong. I have lost my marriage, but I still stand by my beliefs,” she said.
Her story has sparked mixed reactions online, with some Kenyans sympathising with her situation while others criticised her actions, terming them extreme.
The incident highlights how political divisions are increasingly spilling into personal relationships, raising concerns about tolerance and coexistence in a highly charged political environment.
