President William Ruto has directed the Ministry of Education to implement immediate reforms aimed at including Kenya Medical Training College (KMTC) students in government funding starting next semester in May 2026.

Speaking during the commissioning of an Affordable Housing Project at the Kenya Medical Training College Nyamache Campus, the Head of State instructed education officials to ensure KMTC learners benefit from the proposed Tertiary Education Placement and Funding Bill. The new law seeks to streamline student financing by merging key institutions into a single funding body.

The planned reforms will combine the Higher Education Loans Board (HELB), the TVET Fund and the University Fund into one entity. The move is expected to eliminate disparities that have long seen KMTC students struggle to access structured financial support compared to their counterparts in universities.

Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba confirmed that the Bill is currently before Parliament. He noted that once passed into law, it will pave the way for equitable funding across all tertiary institutions, including KMTC.

In addition to funding reforms, President Ruto announced plans to allocate more resources towards recruiting additional staff at KMTC to enhance training capacity. He also commissioned a new student housing project at the Nyamache Campus, which will accommodate 340 learners and improve student welfare.

Established in 1927, KMTC remains the largest training institution for healthcare professionals in Kenya, with over 71 campuses nationwide. The college plays a critical role in the country’s health sector, with a majority of Kenya’s medical workforce having passed through its programmes.

The proposed changes are expected to boost access to medical training and strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
