Ruto and Police

As the dust settles following the decision by Deputy Inspector General of Police( DIG ) Eliud Lagat to ‘step aside’, sources have shed light on the behind the scenes intrigues that saw the police boss hang his boots.

According to sources privy to the chain of activities that preceded Lagat’s withdrawal from office, the police boss was allegedly summoned to a meeting by the head of state.

It was during this meeting that president William Ruto allegedly implored upon DIG Eliud Lagat to step aside from office and pave way for nonpartisan investigations by IPOA and the Internal Affairs Unit.

The announcement of withdrawal from office by Mr Lagat came a few minutes after the cabinet secretary for Interior and Internal Coordination Kipchumba Murkomen issued a statement in which he said police officers are bound to respect human rights and follow a strict code of conduct .

Murkomen however did not give any direct indication that the police boss was about to ‘step aside’. “We shall cross the bridge when we reach there,” said Murkomen when asked about Lagat’s resignation possibilities

While appearing before the National Assembly Committee on Internal Security and Administration, the Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja clearly stated that anyone found to have played a role in the case would be required to step down.

Shortly after his ‘stepping aside’ statement, contents of an explosive revelation by PC Mukwana James directly implicating the DIG in Ojwang’s gangland murder was made public.

Since the onset of the Ojwang’s murder inquiry, the DIG had chosen to remain silent in the face of mounting resignation calls. He is yet to record a statement with IPOA explaining his version of the story.
