Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua revealed his past as a disc jockey at the University of Nairobi during an appearance on Oga Obinna’s live show.

Gachagua shared that he was a self-taught DJ in the 1980s, performing for fun and profit

He purchased a disco system for Ksh20,000—equivalent to millions today—and charged Ksh1,500 per night for gigs. His setup, named “Jagua Disco” after himself, allowed him to bypass hiring other DJs.Gachagua also spoke of his love for breakdancing, inspired by Michael Jackson and the 1984 film Breakin’

He trained extensively but noted the risks, recalling injuries among peers attempting complex moves. His passion for music extended to hiring a band to play “One-Man Guitar” tunes at his home for him and his wife, Dorcas Rigathi.

The couple once frequented a Koinange Street club, but after Dorcas became a pastor, they brought entertainment home

Despite his busy schedule, which includes political meetings at his residence and nationwide travel, Gachagua prioritizes family time. He and Dorcas reserve Mondays to relax, cook, and connect with their sons, barring emergencies

Gachagua, who launched his Democracy for Citizens Party on May 15, 2025, in Nairobi, reflected on balancing his political and personal life

His revelations about his DJ days and love for music and dance offered a glimpse into the lighter side of the former deputy president, contrasting his current role as a prominent political figure.
