Kenyan television enthusiasts fondly recall the golden era of Citizen TV’s Tahidi High, a series that captured the hearts of viewers, critics, and pop culture commentators alike. Among the cast, Ted Kitana, widely recognized for his role as the strict and no-nonsense teacher Mr. Kilunda, stood out as one of the show’s most memorable characters. His commanding presence, sharp delivery, and signature “Kilunda stare” — a look that instantly signaled trouble for mischievous students — made him a household name.

Kitana’s on-screen chemistry with student characters such as OJ, played by Dennis Mugo, Abel Mutua, and Shish, as well as fellow teachers like Miss Morgan and even school staff such as Omosh, created entertaining and relatable classroom dynamics. Viewers were often drawn in by the playful power struggles between Mr. Kilunda and the students, a back-and-forth that many likened to a real-life version of the classic Tom and Jerry rivalry.

When Tahidi High came to an end in 2020, Kitana chose a quieter path away from the spotlight. He relocated to his rural home in Machakos County, where he invested in small businesses, including a salon and a barbershop, while also practicing mixed farming. In a past interview shared online, he expressed satisfaction with village life, praising the fresh food, relaxed environment, and freedom from city pressures, noting that he felt content and fulfilled in his new chapter.
