The political class trooped to Kiambu County today as President William Ruto led leaders and mourners in celebrating the life of Mzee Isaac Ichung’wah, the father of National Assembly Majority Leader Hon. Kimani Ichung’wah. The funeral drew national attention, blending politics, grief, and subtle succession undertones.
In a video shared on the President’s official page, Ruto described Mzee Isaac as a respected elder who raised a dedicated leader now playing a central role in the country’s political arena. Watch the President’s message here.
The Head of State’s presence in Kiambu carried a bigger message beyond condolence. It was a reminder of the deep political ties between the President and his key Mt Kenya ally, Ichung’wah. With Mt Kenya politics already heating up ahead of 2027, the event became a platform where loyalty, unity, and regional influence were quietly on display.
Top government officials, among them Deputy President Kithure Kindiki, ICT CS William Kabogo, interior CS Murkomen, and CS Treasury John Mbadi, also stood side by side with ODM boss Raila Odinga’s allies, signaling a rare moment of unity in mourning.
The bipartisan attendance underscored Ichung’wah’s growing weight as a bridge between government and opposition.
Locals who turned up in large numbers viewed the ceremony as more than a funeral. For many, it was a demonstration of how Mt Kenya continues to anchor national politics. The fact that President Ruto cleared his schedule to personally attend spoke volumes about Ichung’wah’s standing in the ruling coalition.
As speeches flowed, it became clear that Mzee Isaac’s legacy would live on through his son’s political journey. But equally, the gathering showed how even moments of grief double up as subtle stages for shaping Kenya’s political future.
For now, the Ichung’wah family carries both the pride of a father’s legacy and the weight of a community’s expectations moving forward.
