Makueni Governor Mutula Kilonzo Junior has strongly condemned the fatal shooting of two protesters during the Gen Z demonstrations held on June 25th, marking the first anniversary of the youth-led movement that has swept across the nation.
In a statement issued Thursday, Governor Mutula confirmed that two young men, Gashon Mutisya Mwove, 33, from Nguu Masumba, and Peter Makau Mualuko, 23, from Tumbuni, Sultan Hamud, were shot in the chest by police officers in Emali at around 5:30 P.M. Both died from their injuries. Several others were wounded during the violent dispersal by law enforcement.
“I wish to take this opportunity to offer my heartfelt condolences to the families and friends of those who lost their lives, and to wish a speedy recovery to those admitted to hospital with injuries,” said Mutula.
He further condemned the use of live ammunition against peaceful demonstrators, calling the killings unacceptable and unbefitting of a democratic nation.
“I strongly condemn the use of live bullets to disperse demonstrators. The killing of protesters has no place in a modern Kenya,” he stated firmly.
The Gen Z demonstrations, which began last year, are led largely by young Kenyans demanding justice, accountability, and government reform.
