Maku Mutua

Makau Mutua, President Ruto’s advisor and a prominent legal scholar, recently took to social media to proudly celebrate his son Amani’s graduation from the University at Buffalo, The State University of New York.

Amani earned his degree in Philosophy and International Trade, a double major that Mutua described as a stepping stone to a bright future. But what was meant to be a joyful family moment quickly spiraled into a fierce online debate.

While some Kenyans joined in congratulating Amani and commending the family for their academic achievements, a vocal section of social media users didn’t hold back their criticism.

Detractors ridiculed the choice of degree, claiming it was irrelevant or unmarketable, with one commenter dismissing it as graduating in “nothing.” Others used the moment to revisit long-standing political grievances, mocking Mutua for what they see as hypocrisy and political bootlicking.

Some users took a more humorous route, jokingly questioning whether lawyer and political firebrand Miguna Miguna had seen the post, given the well-documented tension between him and Mutua.

Another brought up the imagery in Amani’s graduation photos, suggesting a deeper meaning or political message behind his hand gestures—a veiled jab at Mutua’s own controversial political past.

Despite the harsh comments, a few voices offered genuine congratulations, urging Amani to start the next chapter of life, including marriage and family.

However, even these seemingly positive messages often included backhanded remarks warning the young graduate not to follow in his father’s political footsteps.

Makau Mutua has not responded to the backlash, staying focused on the milestone. The incident highlights how even personal celebrations by public figures are easily politicized in Kenya’s highly charged online space. As the country moves closer to the 2027 elections, it’s clear that no moment, no matter how private, is off-limits in the digital political arena.
