Kikuyu MP and National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichung’wah has surprised many by crediting former Prime Minister Raila Odinga for laying the foundation for Kenya’s affordable housing project.
Speaking during a parliamentary session on Thursday, Ichung’wah acknowledged that the housing initiative was not entirely new and praised Odinga for championing similar ideas during his tenure in the Grand Coalition Government.
“The idea of affordable housing is not something we started today. It was part of Vision 2030, and I must admit that Raila Odinga played a key role in shaping that vision,” Ichung’wah stated.
His remarks came amid ongoing debates about the funding and implementation of the controversial housing levy under President William Ruto’s administration.
Ichung’wah’s recognition of Raila’s earlier contribution marks a rare moment of political civility, especially considering the rivalry between the Kenya Kwanza coalition and the Azimio la Umoja opposition.
He urged fellow leaders to focus on delivering development rather than politicizing every government initiative.
“We must appreciate good ideas, regardless of where they came from. What matters is how we implement them for the benefit of the people,” he added.
Raila has in the past voiced support for affordable housing but criticized the current levy model, terming it punitive.
Ichung’wah’s remarks are likely to spark fresh political conversations as both camps seek to win public trust ahead of the 2027 general elections.
