Jeffrey Kimathi has made a name for himself in both Kenya and the global fashion scene, thanks to his clothing brand, Jamhuri Wear, which has been embraced by international icons like Jay Z, Lupita Nyong’o, Akon, and others.

Kimathi moved to the United States in 1998, driven by dreams of finding opportunities to advance his artistic ambitions. He initially settled in Dallas, taking on various jobs unrelated to his creative field just to make ends meet.

However, in 2001, he made the bold decision to relocate to New York, specifically to Harlem, shortly after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

In New York, Kimathi noticed a significant gap in the representation of Black culture in the fashion industry. Motivated by this realization, he began his journey into fashion, working first at Ecko Unlimited, a well-known fashion brand, and later with MTV. These experiences gave him the expertise he needed to launch his own label.

In 2005, Kimathi partnered with Ibrahim Doukoure, a designer from Guinea, to establish Jamhuri Wear. The brand was born out of Kimathi’s desire to create a fashion line that would represent the Black community on the global stage. One of his early designs featured the image of Kenyan freedom fighter Dedan Kimathi, which he sold both in a local Harlem store and online.

The name “Jamhuri” and the use of African liberation symbols, like Dedan Kimathi and Nelson Mandela, were central to Kimathi’s vision of creating a brand deeply rooted in African identity. His designs also included African flags and the Kenyan national anthem, resonating with Black audiences worldwide.

Jamhuri Wear’s popularity soared, with celebrities like Jay Z, Lupita Nyong’o, Akon, Damian Marley, and Tom Morello sporting the brand. Beyond Jamhuri Wear, Kimathi also founded the Buyu Collection, which blends African artisanal patterns with world-class fashion design.
