Cruise ship

A 29-year-old Kenyan cruise ship worker is fighting for his life in hospital after an alleged suicide attempt aboard a cruise vessel in the Bahamas.

The incident happened shortly after midday on Saturday, August 15, 2026, while the ship was in the Nassau area.

According to reports, the Kenyan crew member asked for a cleaning product from the ship’s kitchen, saying he wanted to clean his work area.

He allegedly ingested the chemical instead.

Shortly afterwards, he was found vomiting and in need of urgent medical attention. An emergency response was launched, and he was taken to hospital for treatment.

The worker was later reported to be in serious condition. He was sedated and unable to communicate with those around him.

Reports indicate that arrangements were being considered to airlift him to the United States, where he could receive specialised medical care.

Bahamian police are investigating the incident.

However, authorities have not publicly identified the cruise ship, the cruise line or the Kenyan worker.

His hometown has also not been disclosed.

The incident has again drawn attention to the difficult conditions sometimes faced by Kenyans working far from home in the international cruise industry.

Many Kenyans work aboard cruise ships in hospitality, housekeeping, cleaning and kitchen roles.

Their jobs can involve long hours, demanding schedules and extended periods away from their families.

In this case, however, investigators are yet to establish what may have led to the alleged suicide attempt.
