Museveni Family

The Ugandan Parliament is currently considering a proposal to extend the term of both Parliament and the executives that include the president from the usual 5 years to 7 years.

This move forms part of a wider review of the Constitution, which has been in place for about 30 years.

The speaker of Uganda’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Anita Among, is one of the main individuals pushing for the implementation of this proposal.

She tried pushing the bill years ago but failed due to a lack of support from other members in the cabinet.

However, this time round, the implementation of the bill looks a possibility, and chances are high that it could be passed by the Ugandan Parliament.

The Ugandan citizens, on the other hand, do not agree with this move, as most have labelled the regime a corrupt one.

Many see the move as extending the mission of the corrupt regime, and it is something they will not easily tolerate.

This same proposal may also include creating an appointed prime minister role that aims to align with regional neighbours and reduce election costs.

If the proposal ends up as a bill and is passed, this will inevitably increase President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni’s reign by 2 more years.

Currently, the president and members of Parliament serve 5-year terms under the 1995 Constitution, with elections happening every 5 years.

The country has already passed other bills in the past that have favoured President Museveni, such as the removal of the presidential age limit in 2017.
