The court will deliver its sentence on September 16, 2026, against former Migori Governor Okoth Obado and two co-convicts following their conviction for the 2018 murder of Sharon Otieno.
Okoth Obado has asked the High Court for a non-custodial sentence following his conviction in the murder of Sharon Otieno.
In a pre-sentence report, Obado cited his age, health condition, lack of previous convictions, compliance with bond terms, and reconciliation efforts with Sharon’s family as reasons for leniency. However, the report noted that he continues to deny responsibility for the murder, making it difficult to establish remorse.
On the other hand, Sharon Otieno’s family told probation officers that her killing caused immense psychological, emotional, and economic suffering. They said they continue to live with the trauma of her death and are caring for the children she left behind. Despite their pain, the family acknowledged receiving support from Obado and indicated they are open to reconciliation following his conviction.
While probation officers acknowledged factors that could support community-based rehabilitation, they stopped short of recommending a non-custodial sentence, leaving the final decision to the High Court.
The court is expected to weigh both the mitigating factors and the gravity of the offence before sentencing.
