As the country moves closer to the next General Election, political activity is gathering momentum as leaders declare their ambitions and align themselves with different camps.
Although most first-term governors are expected to seek re-election, some could face difficult contests because of their current political positions. Among those widely viewed as vulnerable are James Orengo, Simba Arati, and Kimani Wamatangi.
James Orengo
The Siaya governor has emerged as one of the leading figures in the Linda Mwananchi movement after distancing himself from ODM. He has openly opposed ODM’s decision to support President William Ruto ahead of the next election.
With his relationship with ODM strained, Orengo is expected to seek another term under a different political party. ODM is also likely to field its own candidate, setting up a fierce contest in Siaya, a county traditionally regarded as an ODM stronghold. A candidate backed by the party and influential local leaders such as Alego Usonga MP Samuel Atandi and Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga could enjoy a significant advantage.
Simba Arati
Kisii Governor Simba Arati remains one of the country’s most recognizable county leaders, thanks to his extensive political career. He has aligned himself with the government while preparing to defend his seat on an ODM ticket.
However, his position differs from the political mood among many residents of Kisii, who have thrown their support behind former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i. If Matiang’i endorses a rival candidate, Arati could face a highly competitive re-election battle.
Kimani Wamatangi
Kiambu Governor Kimani Wamatangi is still affiliated with UDA, although he has yet to reveal the party he intends to use for his re-election campaign.
With Kiambu and much of the Mt. Kenya region increasingly viewed as strongholds of Rigathi Gachagua’s DCP, Wamatangi’s political future could depend on the platform he chooses. Failing to secure the backing of Gachagua and his supporters may make his bid for a second term considerably more challenging.
