A Kenyan woman has shared how fear of losing her job pushed her to drastically change her lifestyle by moving from a rented house to a simple mud house in the countryside.
Cynthia Atona explained that the decision came after witnessing several of her colleagues lose their jobs due to financial challenges facing the company they worked for. The uncertainty made her worried that she could be next, yet she was still paying rent in town with no financial backup plan.
According to Atona, the fear of sudden unemployment made her rethink her life and priorities. In November 2025, she relocated to a piece of land that was largely bushy and started building a simple mud house where she could live without the pressure of paying monthly rent.
She said the transition was not easy because she had very limited resources and had to begin almost everything from scratch. However, the move eventually opened a new chapter in her life as she adopted an off-grid lifestyle focused on self-sufficiency.
Today, Atona grows some of her own food and keeps chickens, which help sustain her daily needs. She also dug a 59 foot well to ensure a reliable water supply and installed a large tank for harvesting rainwater.

The woman explained that living off-grid requires careful planning, including managing food production, water supply, energy sources, and waste. Some people use solar energy or biogas, while others rely on natural resources available in their environment.
Despite the challenges of the new lifestyle, Atona says she has found peace and satisfaction in living a simpler life. She added that the experience taught her that life has no fixed manual and people can choose paths that suit their circumstances.
Her story inspired many Kenyans online, with some praising her courage and creativity in preparing for uncertain economic times while striving to become more self reliant.
