Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has opened up about a painful health scare that left him requiring surgery — all caused by a long-standing habit of biting his nails and trimming them with a razor blade.
Salasya revealed that he developed a severe abscess on his finger, which doctors traced to poor nail hygiene. The infection became so serious that it required a surgical procedure to drain and treat it.
“It Led to a Surgical Operation”
Sharing details on social media, the MP admitted that his own grooming habits were to blame.
“For those of us who don’t cut our nails properly — using razor blades or biting them like me — now look, it has led to this surgical operation.”
He described the procedure as extremely painful and urged his followers to avoid similar habits.

Salasya also posted an image showing the aftermath of the operation. In the photo, he wears a light short-sleeved shirt with a blue-and-white pattern while holding up his heavily bandaged right index finger. The thick white gauze, secured with medical tape, highlights the extent of the treatment. His expression appears serious, underscoring the gravity of the ordeal.
A Commitment to Better Hygiene
The MP has since vowed to change his ways.
“Today I’m buying a nail cutter. I’ve refused to bite my nails — the pain I’ve felt and the abscess that was removed, let’s leave it at that.”
He ended his message with a touch of humour, referencing his athletic participation in the ongoing EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games in Uganda and joking about needing to stay in top form.
