Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) has issued a stern warning to customers against making payments for electricity services through unauthorized channels. In a statement released on Friday, the utility firm cautioned that using unapproved agents, brokers, or third-party platforms to pay for electricity bills, connections, or other related services exposes customers to fraud and potential financial losses.

The company emphasized that all payments for services should strictly be made through Kenya Power’s official channels. These include its designated bank accounts, M-PESA Paybill numbers (888880 for postpaid and 888888 for prepaid), and authorized customer service centers. KPLC noted that payments made outside these channels cannot be traced or refunded if fraud occurs, leaving customers vulnerable.

“We have observed an increase in cases where customers are lured into making payments through individuals who promise faster service delivery or discounted rates,” the statement read. “We wish to remind all our customers that the company does not engage brokers or agents to collect payments on its behalf.”

Kenya Power urged the public to exercise caution and verify payment details before completing any transaction. Additionally, the company encouraged customers to report suspicious requests or fraudulent activities by calling the Kenya Power contact center or visiting the nearest customer service office.

The warning comes amid rising concerns over fake connection deals and illegal reconnections carried out by unscrupulous individuals posing as Kenya Power staff.

The utility firm reiterated that it is committed to enhancing transparency and ensuring that all services, including new connections, reconnections, and bill payments, are processed through official and secure channels only.
