Nyali MP Mohammed Ali has reignited public anger over the controversial death of digital activist Albert Ojwang, accusing top police officials of a cover-up.
The former investigative journalist, known for his Jicho Pevu exposés, is now calling for urgent answers and accountability.Ojwang, who was arrested over alleged online remarks against a senior police official, died while in custody at Nairobi’s Central Police Station.
Police claimed he hit his head on the cell wall, but an autopsy told a different story, revealing head trauma, neck compression, and severe soft tissue injuries consistent with torture.
Ali questioned the transfer of Ojwang from Homa Bay to Nairobi, bypassing multiple local stations.
He also challenged the silence around Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat, who filed the complaint leading to the arrest. “Why is the complainant not considered a suspect?” Ali asked. He further demanded to know who ordered the arrest, why Ojwang was detained in a solitary cell, and whether he was already dead before arrival.
The MP urged Nairobi Central officers to speak out and called for the release of CCTV footage to reveal what really happened.
Protests have erupted in Nairobi, with demonstrators demanding justice and carrying placards reading “Stop Killing Us”. Police responded with tear gas, further escalating tensions.
As the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) continues its probe, several officers have been suspended.
Still, Ali insists that real accountability must begin at the top — and called for DIG Lagat’s immediate resignation.
“This case isn’t just about one young man. It’s about whether Kenyans can speak freely without fearing death. “Justice for Albert means justice for all,” Ali said.
