The call for Africa to have a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council has dominated the 80th General Assembly in New York. President William Ruto took the lead in pushing the agenda, warning that the continued exclusion of Africa undermines the credibility of the United Nations.
African leaders stressed that the continent cannot continue to be sidelined when most of the issues debated at the Security Council concern Africa. Peacekeeping missions, conflicts, and humanitarian crises affecting the continent are often discussed, yet Africa has no permanent representation in the decision making process.
A permanent seat would give Africa veto power, one of the strongest tools in shaping outcomes at the Security Council. This would allow the continent to influence or stop resolutions that touch directly on its security and stability.
The benefits would extend beyond veto authority since permanent membership also carries weight in authorizing sanctions, military actions, and peacekeeping operations. Africa would also be in a stronger position to push for global reforms on economic fairness, migration challenges, and climate action.
The Security Council has remained dominated by five permanent members, namely the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Russia, and China. These countries have held influence since the end of the Second World War, using veto powers to protect their interests and control outcomes of global debates.
For Africa, permanent membership would be recognition of its population strength, resource wealth, and growing influence in global affairs. It would transform the continent from a subject of international policy to an active shaper of decisions that affect billions.
However, reforms at the Security Council have been resisted for decades as current members are reluctant to share their power. Success will depend on Africa’s unity and global acceptance of the urgent need for change.
If achieved, a permanent seat would elevate Africa’s role in international governance and ensure its voice shapes peace, justice, and security worldwide.
