Tension is rising across the country after the arrest of Hiram Kimathi, a prominent activist associated with the Fighting Brutality and Impunity movement. He was apprehended early Saturday morning in Kinoru Village, Meru County, under circumstances that remain unclear.

Kimathi’s arrest adds to a growing list of activists detained in recent weeks following nationwide protests against police brutality, enforced disappearances, and alleged state repression. Witnesses say plainclothes officers seized him without presenting a warrant, triggering panic among local residents.

In a recent interview shared online, Kimathi fiercely criticized the government’s response to demonstrations and warned that youth across Kenya were ready to resist oppression. “This is not just about the streets. It’s about reclaiming our voice and dignity as citizens,” he said passionately.

His words now ring louder after his sudden arrest. Human rights groups have already condemned the move, saying it signals deepening intolerance for dissent. They are calling for his immediate release and the protection of civil liberties, especially the freedom of expression and peaceful assembly.

Kimathi had become a symbolic voice in the anti-brutality movement, often spotted at the frontlines of protests carrying placards and leading chants demanding justice for victims of police violence.

The arrest comes barely days after Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen publicly defended the police and dismissed any fear of ICC scrutiny — further deepening fears that the state is unwilling to account for alleged abuses.

Meru residents have remained on edge, with some warning that the crackdown could spark fresh demonstrations. Online, #FreeHiramKimathi has begun trending as calls for accountability gain traction.

As Kenya grapples with growing unrest, Kimathi’s arrest marks yet another flashpoint in a country where voices of resistance are now increasingly met with handcuffs.
