The burial of beloved comedian KK Mwenyewe in Lari, Kiambu, turned chaotic on Tuesday after mourners heckled Dennis Itumbi during his tribute. Itumbi, the Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy, faced unexpected resistance from the crowd just minutes into his speech.

The ceremony had begun on a sombre note. Dense fog lingered as fans, fellow content creators, and political figures gathered to honour the young comic known for his witty impersonations of former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.

Itumbi, representing the government, aimed to reassure the creative community of ongoing support, particularly around content monetisation. But as he outlined state efforts, including partnerships with social media platforms, discontent grew.

Tension peaked when one mourner shouted “Wantam,” a phrase that quickly caught on. Within seconds, the crowd joined in with loud chants, drowning out Itumbi’s remarks. Attempts to continue his speech were met with jeers and accusations of dishonesty.

Visibly shaken, Itumbi tried to salvage the moment by proposing government-backed support initiatives and promising help for creators whose platforms remain unmonetised. He mentioned plans for a content creators’ Sacco and named a leading digital figure to spearhead the initiative.
