Mud houses are often associated with poverty and backwardness, but a construction expert in Kenya is challenging this perception by building a modern and eco-friendly mud house that has some unique features. Boss Yator, who shared photos of his project on social media, revealed that the house is ‘bulletproof’ and costs much less than conventional houses.
According to Yator, the house is made of rammed earth, a technique that involves compacting natural materials like earth, sand, cement, and gravel to form sturdy walls. He said that this method makes the house resistant to bullets, as the mud reduces their velocity or absorbs them completely. He also said that the house is environmentally friendly and sustainable, as it uses locally available and renewable resources.
The house has a brown exterior finish and features wooden columns that provide structural support. It also has windows of various shapes and sizes, allowing natural light to enter the interior. The roof is thatched, adding to the traditional aesthetic of the house. The foundation wall is layered with stones to enhance stability.
Inside, the house has a wooden ceiling and staircase. The open kitchen has a wooden design and offers essential amenities. The house is fully wired for electricity, accommodating various appliances, including a ceiling fan.
Yator said that he was inspired by a similar house in Uganda, and he plans to adapt and implement the concept in Kenya. He said that he is currently working on a single-story building using the same technique. He said that the house will have a white and brown exterior finish and a balcony on the top floor.
Yator’s project has attracted a lot of attention and admiration from Kenyans, who praised his creativity and innovation. Some expressed interest in owning such a house, while others appreciated his efforts to revive the traditional mud house with a modern twist.
