Tension gripped Naivasha after protesting youths set ablaze a truck linked to a contractor involved in the construction of the Rironi–Mau Summit expressway, bringing transport along the busy Nairobi–Nakuru highway to a standstill.
The dramatic incident, captured in images by photojournalist Antony Gitonga, unfolded amid growing frustration among locals over the ongoing project and the rising cost of living, particularly fuel prices. The protests quickly escalated, with sections of the highway barricaded as angry youths lit fires and chanted slogans, demanding immediate government intervention.
Witnesses reported that the truck was targeted as a symbol of perceived neglect and economic strain associated with the expressway construction. Thick plumes of smoke billowed into the sky, forcing motorists to either turn back or remain stranded for hours as the situation intensified.
Transport along the critical corridor, which connects Nairobi to western Kenya and neighboring countries, was paralyzed. Long queues of vehicles stretched for kilometers, with passengers left in uncertainty as security agencies moved in to restore order.
Local leaders have since called for calm, urging residents to express grievances through peaceful means. At the same time, they appealed to the government to address the underlying concerns fueling the unrest, including compensation issues, job opportunities for locals, and the broader impact of infrastructure projects on surrounding communities.
The incident comes at a time when Kenyans are grappling with high fuel prices, a factor that has significantly contributed to public discontent across different regions. Analysts warn that unless urgent measures are taken to ease the economic pressure, such protests could become more frequent.
As calm gradually returns to Naivasha, attention now shifts to authorities and stakeholders to find lasting solutions that balance development goals with the welfare of affected communities.
