There’s no hiding the political tension in the air after President William Ruto and former President Uhuru Kenyatta met face-to-face at State House Nairobi today. And while the smiles were there for the cameras, behind the scenes, leaders from Mt Kenya are already speaking with fire.

Former Nyeri Town MP Ngunjiri Wambugu has broken his silence—firm, direct, and unapologetic.

“There is no way Uhuru will support (or stand silent) when attempts are made to isolate Mt Kenya from the rest of Kenya,” Wambugu posted. “And it doesn’t matter whether the ‘isolator’ is from within, or without.”

The timing of his message is no coincidence. With Uhuru and Ruto seen together for the first time in months during the EAC-SADC summit, many hoped it signaled a possible handshake moment. But Wambugu’s post seems to warn otherwise.

Political watchers know Mt Kenya’s unity has been fragile—split between those loyal to Uhuru, those rallying behind the second in command, and a rising class of young leaders with no patience for silence.

And now, with key political maneuvers happening behind closed doors, leaders like Wambugu are making it clear: if anyone thinks Mt Kenya will quietly watch from the sidelines, they’re mistaken.

What’s also striking is that Wambugu isn’t just defending Uhuru—he’s sending a shot at anyone, even from within the region, trying to play divide-and-rule. That could mean the message isn’t just for Ruto—but possibly others wearing familiar faces.

Whether today’s meeting was just protocol or a calculated political signal, Mt Kenya politics has officially been stirred.
