Kiminini Member of Parliament Kakai Bissau has stirred fresh political debate after leading residents in chants of “two terms” during a public rally in Trans Nzoia County attended by Deputy President Kithure Kindiki.
The chants, widely interpreted as support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027, caught many by surprise given Bissau’s political affiliation. The legislator was elected on a Democratic Action Party (DAP-K) ticket, a party led by Eugene Wamalwa, who is currently aligned with the opposition.
During the rally, which drew a large crowd, Bissau appeared to energize the audience as he repeatedly invoked the slogan, prompting residents to respond enthusiastically. The “two terms” chant has in recent months become synonymous with pro-government campaigns seeking to consolidate early support for President Ruto’s second term, even as the country remains mid-way through his first term.
The move is likely to raise questions within DAP-K and the wider opposition coalition, where leaders have maintained a critical stance against the Kenya Kwanza administration. Political analysts say Bissau’s actions may signal shifting loyalties or growing divisions within opposition ranks, especially in regions considered politically competitive.
Efforts to reach Bissau for clarification on his remarks were ongoing by press time. However, allies of the MP defended his position, arguing that leaders have a right to engage with all levels of government for the benefit of their constituents.
On the other hand, critics within the opposition have termed the incident as political betrayal, warning that such actions could weaken collective bargaining power against the ruling coalition.
The development adds a new layer to the evolving political landscape as early realignments begin to take shape ahead of the 2027 General Election.
