Nelson Marwa Sospeter, often simply known as Nelson Marwa, was born in Kuria, Migori County, Kenya, to a missionary father.

His childhood was marked by frequent moves, including time spent growing up in Tanzania and Uganda, which shaped his early exposure to diverse East African contexts.

A highly educated civil servant, Marwa holds three master’s degrees, reflecting his commitment to intellectual rigor alongside his administrative career.

He began his public service as a junior district officer in Nyeri in the 1980s, steadily climbing the ranks in Kenya’s provincial administration. By the early 2000s, he had served in various roles across regions like Kinango, Rift Valley, and Mombasa, honing a reputation for efficiency and unyielding integrity.

Marwa rose through the ranks of government administration, earning a reputation as a “fearless” operative who clashed with powerful figures, including former Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho.

His tenure has often been marked by bold operations against drug cartels, youth radicalization, and bureaucratic inefficiencies moves that sometimes drew controversy but also widespread praise for restoring order.

Marwa served in various administrative and security capacities. He worked in regional government offices, focusing on community policing and counter-extremism. By the mid-2010s, he was involved in operations targeting Al-Shabaab recruitment in coastal areas, where he coordinated with police to dismantle terror cells.

Back then Marwa’s position was taken by the then Nairobi regional commissioner Bernard Leparmarai.

The changes were made after the former Interior CS Fred Matiang’i reshuffled regional and county commissioners.

This came after retired President Uhuru Kenyatta nominated Nelson Marwa as the PS in the Ministry of Devolution headed by then Cabinet Secretary Eugine Wamalwa.

Marwa never shied away from stepping on the toes of powerful coast leaders, including former Governor Ali Hassan Joho with the two playings out their rivalry in public severally. In January 2018, Marwa had ordered for the closure of all strip clubs licensed by the Joho’s administration.

“People have lured young women to dance naked in front of men without shame. It is such a shocking and disgusting sight,” remarked Marwa.

Though married and with a family, Marwa has always kept his private life just that, private.

Before his promotion as the regional coordinator in 2016, Marwa had been the Mombasa County Commissioner for six years during which time he fought against drug dealers and terror threats, when even the police abandoned him and “only God, the President and my family supported me in the fight against terrorism, but I soldiered on,” Marwa told The Nairobian.
