By using a provocative numerical lens to frame the new alliances, Mutahi Ngunyi has brought new life to Kenya’s political discourse. Ahead of the 2027 elections, his most recent remarks on social media have drawn fresh attention to political power and voter blocs.

His research revolves around a group he calls a familial alliance: Fred Matiang’i, Rigathi Gachagua, and Kalonzo Musyoka. Ngunyi claims that this trio has a total support base of more than 9 million people, most of whom are based in historically significant areas.

However, he compares this coalition to President William Ruto’s wider support, which he credits to a number of smaller, scattered communities that, when combined, garner more than 14 million votes. According to this reinterpretation, historically vote-rich areas could no longer have the same strategic edge.

Ngunyi’s argument’s timing is important. Gachagua’s playful comment that the three are cousins has become a cultural moniker that has gone viral. Nowadays, the term “Cuzo” is extensively used online to denote everything from unofficial personal ties to political solidarity.
