The National Police Service has expressed concern over potential unrest ahead of Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna’s planned rally in Kakamega, citing intelligence suggesting possible attempts to disrupt the event.
Speaking during a press briefing on Friday, February 20, Western Region Police Commander Issa Mohamud said authorities had received information indicating that armed groups could be mobilised from Nairobi to interfere with the gathering. He did not provide specific details but stressed that security agencies are closely monitoring the situation.
Mohamud noted that police had not received any formal request for security support from Sifuna’s team. Nevertheless, he assured residents that adequate measures are in place to maintain order and safeguard public safety. He cautioned against relying on unverified social media reports, describing them as potentially misleading.
“We will not allow our country to descend into chaos,” Mohamud said, adding that sufficient officers have been deployed to ensure peace before, during and after the rally. He emphasized that law enforcement would act firmly against any individuals found engaging in unlawful activities.
The warning comes amid heightened political tensions in Kakamega, where rival claims and online exchanges between leaders have intensified in recent days. While stating that political disagreements fall outside the police mandate, Mohamud reiterated that maintaining security remains the service’s primary responsibility.
Residents were urged to remain calm and report any suspicious activity to authorities. The rally forms part of Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi campaign activities in the region.
Police have maintained that all necessary steps will be taken to protect participants and the wider public, underscoring that public safety remains their top priority.
