A video showing a Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) recruit crying while struggling through a physically demanding training exercise has attracted attention on social media.

The footage captures the young recruit attempting to climb a hilly road while carrying a large backpack and holding a rifle. He appears visibly exhausted as he slowly makes his way up the slope under the supervision of a military instructor.

Despite his apparent distress, the instructor remains close and urges him to continue with the exercise rather than give up.

In the video, the trainer can be heard telling him, “Si unaona uko sawa? Haya twende!” as he encourages the struggling recruit to gather himself and keep moving.

However, the recruit appears overwhelmed by the physical demands of the exercise and breaks down in tears while trying to complete the uphill march. TUKO reported that he pleaded with his instructor to allow him to rest, but was instructed to continue.

The footage has drawn attention to the demanding nature of military induction, where recruits are expected to develop physical endurance, discipline and mental resilience.

In Kenya, aspiring soldiers undergo rigorous training at the Defence Forces Recruits Training School (DFRTS) in Eldoret. The programme involves physically challenging exercises, endurance drills and field activities designed to prepare recruits for the responsibilities of military service.

For individuals transitioning from civilian life, adjusting to the strict routines and physically demanding environment can be challenging. Carrying heavy loads over difficult terrain while following instructions and pushing through exhaustion is part of the preparation.

The training is guided by the military philosophy of train hard, fight easy, which emphasises preparing soldiers to cope with difficult conditions during service.

The latest footage has also renewed conversations about the realities of military training. While some viewers may find the recruit’s emotional reaction amusing, the video also illustrates the pressure and physical strain that aspiring soldiers can experience during induction.

TUKO noted that videos of recruits struggling or breaking down during training have previously attracted public attention. The demanding nature of such exercises has also raised health and safety concerns, particularly following reports of recruits suffering medical complications during training.

Although the identity of the recruit and the exact circumstances surrounding the recording were not disclosed in the report, the footage provides a glimpse into the challenges faced by those seeking to join Kenya’s armed forces.
