The former Kenyan socialite, Pesh Lema, aka Peninah Lema Munyithya, shares her shocking experience in Ghana. That luxurious lifestyle came to an abrupt halt when a friend fixed a suitcase swap in her favour.
The journey from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport to Ghana went on smooth sailing until the authorities called for a random luggage check. Inside her suitcase, officials found the brown envelope, within which were narcotics cleverly hidden from sight.
Pesh Lema was taken in and interrogated thoroughly by Ghanaian anti-narcotics agents.”I was just stupid. I thought it was a joke.” She managed to keep her cool socialite demeanour.
Proof of the difficulty for her innocent pleadings was against their Ghanaian laws. Found guilty of drug smuggling, she received a sentence of ten years.
She spent seven years and six months in prison, during which she became a Christian.
She was released in late 2022 on account of good behaviour. Her saga brings to mind the case of Margaret Nduta in Vietnam, where a similar suitcase swap led to dire consequences.
Tragically, upon her return to Kenya, Pesh Lema suffered yet another loss with the death of her mother. Her mother had been ill since 2021 and died on 18 March 2025.
Pesh Lema’s tale is a cautionary one about the unseen perils of a glamorous lifestyle. Dramatic turns and remarkable self-transition mark her story even more.
Arrest, trial, and release are the key events that turned Pesh Lema’s life and continue to inspire many others.
