The National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA) has issued six urgent road safety rules for all drivers ahead of the Easter holiday, following a wave of deadly accidents across Kenya.
In a public notice released on Monday, April 7, NTSA warned motorists to strictly follow these guidelines to avoid further bloodshed on the roads during the upcoming busy season.
First, drivers have been urged to observe speed limits at all times. NTSA stressed that overspeeding has become a major cause of road carnage, especially during holiday travel.
Second, they advised motorists to remain sober, describing sobriety as “the silent hero of every safe trip home.” Drunk driving, they warned, is dangerous and punishable.
The third rule is to clear stalled vehicles immediately. Drivers must also put warning signs to alert oncoming traffic and prevent more accidents.
Fourth, motorists are advised to get enough rest before starting any journey. Fatigue can cause deadly mistakes, and drivers are urged to plan ahead to avoid driving while tired.
NTSA also instructed vehicle owners to service their cars before travelling. A well-maintained vehicle reduces the chances of breakdowns and accidents.
Lastly, they asked all road users to report reckless driving by calling the police on the 911 hotline. This move aims to involve the public in enforcing safety.
The new rules come shortly after Transport CS Davis Chirchir announced that NTSA will be reintroducing alcohol breath tests on major roads. Drivers caught over the legal alcohol limit face a Ksh100,000 fine or up to two years in jail.
These actions are part of new laws under the 2025 traffic rules targeting drink driving, school and commercial transport, and vehicle inspections.Authorities hope these measures will save lives during one of the year’s busiest travel periods.
