Gen Muhoozi

Uganda is still finding its balance after the recent general elections, a period marked by tension, debate, and strong political emotions.

At the centre of the discussion is the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) and its role in the arrest of opposition figures.

Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, has now spoken out clearly, responding to growing public criticism and accusations directed at the army.

Gen. Muhoozi dismissed claims that security forces abduct political opponents. According to him, what the army does is lawful arrest, not abduction.

“We don’t abduct, we arrest. If you breach the law, you get arrested,” he said.

He explained that all individuals taken into custody by security forces are accounted for, and none simply disappear.

While he admitted that some suspects may take time before being presented in court, he strongly denied that the government engages in abductions.

In recent months, several high-profile opposition politicians and activists have been arrested, sparking outrage from the public, civil society groups, and international observers.

Many critics argue that the arrests are politically motivated and meant to silence dissent.

However, Gen. Muhoozi insists that the law applies to everyone equally, regardless of political position.

“If you break the law, you will be arrested. That is how any government works,” he added.

The country is still recovering from a heated election season that left many citizens divided. Protests, arrests, and strong political statements have kept the nation on edge.
