Caroline Mutuku, a single mother from Nairobi, got the shock of her life after reading her daughter’s diary. What she found was not just a teen’s random thoughts, but a heartbreaking cry for help.
Her 21-year-old daughter, Eve Anyango Owira, has Type 1 diabetes, a condition they discovered late in 2023 after she collapsed several times. Doctors said her body doesn’t produce insulin and that she must take injections for the rest of her life.
Mutuku explained that despite their close bond, her daughter never showed how deeply she was hurting until the diary told it all. In it, Anyango described feeling drained, hopeless, and full of guilt for not managing her health well.
“I’m scared I won’t graduate in 2026,” Anyango wrote. “I’m angry at my dad for not being there. Angry at myself for everything I can’t control. I feel bitter, anxious, and alone.”
The diary also revealed her struggles with severe panic attacks, weight loss, and emotional pain caused by family problems. Mutuku, a hairdresser, said she cried after reading the diary. She knew her daughter was struggling, but not this much.
“I can’t afford her medicine. Business is slow. I’m doing my best, but we’re drowning,” Mutuku said tearfully. She added that Anyango needs regular insulin or her condition could get worse, possibly even fatal.
