The luxurious mansion located next to State House in Nairobi has once again attracted public attention after details about its history, ownership and modern transformation emerged online.
Today, the high-end property serves as former President Uhuru Kenyatta’s official post-presidential office. It is also home to the Uhuru Kenyatta Institute, an organisation founded by Uhuru in 2022 after he left office.
The institute focuses on peace mediation, conflict resolution and environmental sustainability projects across Africa. Since leaving power, Uhuru has remained active in regional diplomacy and mediation efforts in different African countries.
Before becoming part of the Kenyatta family estate, the property was widely known as Caledonian House. The land and the old bungalow sitting on it had existed for years near State House, making it one of the most strategic and secure locations in Nairobi.
Reports indicate that after Uhuru became president following the 2013 General Election, major changes were made to the property. The old bungalow was reportedly demolished to pave way for the construction of a modern ultra-luxury mansion.
The new residence is believed to have cost around KSh 700 million to build. The mansion was designed with high-level security and luxury features suitable for a former head of state.
According to reports, the residence contains bulletproof windows, several luxurious bedrooms, private office spaces, a rooftop helipad and a swimming pool. The compound is also said to have heavy security due to its location near State House.
The mansion reportedly has two major wings. One section mainly contains the swimming pool and leisure areas, while the second wing, which includes the helipad, is mostly used for receiving and hosting guests.
The ground floor is said to contain spacious living rooms, dining areas, office spaces and a modern kitchen fitted with high-end equipment. The upper floor reportedly houses the bedrooms and other private family spaces.
Inside the compound, there is also said to be a roundabout leading to a private driveway and a large parking area for visitors and official vehicles.
On Google Maps, the property can be identified as the Uhuru Kenyatta Institute, where the general layout of the compound, including the roundabout and orientation of the mansion, can be seen.
