Grandchild

For nearly a year, Lilian Kwamboka lived with deep worry and unanswered questions. Her daughter disappeared from their home in Kibra in March 2025, leaving the family in pain and uncertainty. Every day became a search as Kwamboka moved across Nairobi, visiting children’s homes, hospitals, orphanages, and even mortuaries. Each visit brought hope, followed by disappointment. Still, she refused to give up.

After 11 painful months, help came from an unexpected place. On February 2, 2026, Kwamboka came across a photo shared on social media. It showed an unidentified young woman receiving care at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH).The moment she saw the image, Kwamboka felt certain and she recognised her daughter instantly.

The following day, she rushed to KNH with the post saved on her phone. When she finally saw her daughter lying in the hospital ward, emotions overwhelmed her. Mother and daughter reunited in tears, ending months of fear and silence. Hospital officials later explained what had happened. According to Kelwon Kandie, Head of Medical Social Work at KNH, the young woman had been brought to the hospital on September 25, 2025. A good Samaritan found her along Hospital Road and took her in for help. She had no identification and could not contact family. As a result, KNH continued to care for her under its social support system.

During her stay at the hospital, another life-changing moment occurred. On November 17, 2025, the young woman gave birth. Kwamboka’s search for her missing daughter unexpectedly turned into the discovery of a grandchild. Meeting the baby for the first time, Kwamboka described the moment as overwhelming and healing. What began as fear ended with new life and hope.

“I have no gift to give,” she said quietly. “But may God bless the hospital staff for protecting my child and my grandchild.”

The reunion has touched many Kenyans online, highlighting the power of social media and the importance of compassionate healthcare. It also reflects the silent struggles many families face in cities like Nairobi. For Kwamboka, the past months of pain have finally given way to relief. Her story is one of endurance, faith, and the unbreakable bond between a mother and her child.
