Ezekiel Kyama, popularly known online as “Mr Speaker Sir” following his rise to public attention during the 2024 anti-government protests and the dramatic breach of Parliament, was on Monday arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts in Nairobi.
Kyama gained national recognition during the June 2024 demonstrations after videos and images linked to the Parliament invasion circulated widely on social media, turning him into a familiar public figure associated with the protests.
His court appearance comes nearly one month after reports emerged that he had resurfaced from hiding.
During proceedings at Milimani Court, Kyama was represented by a legal team led by Embakasi East MP Babu Owino. His lawyers argued for his release and maintained that their client was cooperating with authorities and was not a flight risk.
The defence team urged the court to uphold Kyama’s constitutional rights and allow the legal process to continue without unnecessary restrictions.
After hearing submissions from both sides, the court ordered his release, allowing him to remain free as the matter proceeds through the justice system.
Supporters gathered outside the court welcomed the decision, with some describing the move as an important step toward ensuring fair legal treatment regardless of political circumstances.
The case has drawn renewed public attention due to Kyama’s symbolic association with the 2024 protests, which marked one of Kenya’s most significant periods of youth-led demonstrations in recent years.
Authorities have continued pursuing legal action against individuals linked to incidents that occurred during the protests, while rights groups and political actors remain divided over how accountability and justice should be handled.
Kyama is expected to return to court on dates that will be communicated as the proceedings continue.
