A Nairobi man, Lewis Hasman, has explained why he decided to resign from his KSh 25,000 monthly job despite having no alternative source of income. Although he remains unemployed and is facing financial difficulties, Hasman maintains that leaving the position was the right decision for his future.
Hasman said he worked at the company for about one and a half years, spending approximately ten hours at work each day, five days a week. Over time, he began questioning whether the job was helping him achieve his long-term personal and financial goals.
In a TikTok video, he outlined four major factors that influenced his decision to resign. One of his main concerns was his salary, which he said was only enough to meet essential expenses, including rent, food and transportation. According to him, earning a fixed amount gradually affected how he viewed his potential.
“The job limited what I believed was possible. I could not see beyond my monthly salary, and that is a big problem,” he said.
Hasman also discovered that the company’s highest-paid employee earned approximately KSh 80,000 monthly. He said this unintentionally made him view that figure as the maximum level of financial success he could achieve within the organisation.
Another concern was the demanding schedule. Working long hours reportedly left him physically exhausted and mentally drained, making it difficult to dedicate time and energy to developing his own projects.
His performance in sales further strengthened his desire to pursue independent opportunities. Hasman said he regularly recorded a conversion rate of around 20%, significantly higher than the company’s monthly target of 2%. This convinced him that he could potentially use his sales abilities to build something for himself.
He also revealed that workplace pressure, targets and night shifts negatively affected his lifestyle. According to Hasman, he increasingly turned to drinking and smoking to cope with the stress, which he considered a serious warning about his well-being.
Despite not receiving a salary since May and acknowledging his current financial struggles, Hasman remains optimistic about his decision and future prospects.
“The potential I see in front of me is so huge that I would not trade it for anything,” he said.
