Cetirizine is a commonly used allergy medicine that has recently attracted attention on social media following claims that it can be used to achieve vaginal dryness or tightening.

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board has now warned Kenyans against misusing the tablets, dismissing the claims as misleading and cautioning the public about potential health risks.

In a public safety statement issued on November 4, 2026, the regulator clarified that cetirizine is an antihistamine approved for treating allergic conditions such as allergic rhinitis and urticaria.

The statement, signed by Chief Executive Officer Dr Ahmed I Mohamed, explained that the medicine is intended for oral use and should be taken according to instructions from a qualified healthcare professional.

The Board emphasised that cetirizine is not approved for vaginal use and that there is no established scientific evidence supporting claims that it can tighten the vagina.

The regulator warned that inserting the tablets into the vagina could cause irritation, burning, soreness, pain and discomfort. It also cautioned that using medicines in ways they were not intended for could interfere with the natural vaginal environment and increase the risk of infections.

The Board further explained that taking more cetirizine than recommended could lead to excessive sleepiness, dizziness, tiredness, restlessness, confusion, a rapid heartbeat and difficulty passing urine.

Members of the public were advised against inserting cetirizine or other oral medicines into the vagina. The regulator also urged consumers to use the medicine only for its approved purposes and follow the recommended dosage.

Women experiencing vaginal dryness or other sexual health concerns were encouraged to consult qualified healthcare professionals instead of relying on unverified information circulating online.

The Board reminded Kenyans that suspected medicine side effects and safety concerns can be reported through its online portal or the mobile application.

The Pharmacy and Poisons Board reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that medicines available in Kenya meet the required standards of quality, safety and efficacy.
